AI Initiative Vision and Approach
VISION
The AI Initiative is a multi-faceted and collaborative effort aimed at spurring transformative change in teaching and learning across California’s three public higher education systems and beyond. Drawing on insights from the Learning Lab, the Initiative focuses on:
- Optimizing AI Development Optimizing AI Development to enhance student learning through improved use and accessibility of AI and AI-related resources; and
- Empowering Faculty Empowering Faculty as leaders and innovators in the AI movement to advance equitable learning.
- Evaluating Use Cases Evaluating Use Cases to understand when and where AI enhances teaching and learning versus where AI impedes learning or has no beneficial impact.

Grantmaking through the AI Challenge supports AI tool development, evaluation of use cases, and increased AI literacy.
Convenings and Community
Hosted convenings and faculty learning communities create opportunities for shared learning and collaboration.
Increasing AI Literacy
Substack commentary and AI podcast (My Robot Teacher) increase AI literacy broadly across CA public higher education audience.
Aggregating AI Assets
Aggregating AI-related curriculum through the Curated Asset Repository for Learning Excellence (CARLE) provides faculty with effective tools and resources developed and used by their California peers.
