On October 14 and 15, faculty and administrative leadership from all three California public and private higher education segments, State of California leadership, nonprofit organizations, philanthropic leadership, and more joined the California Education Learning Lab for our 2022 INSPIRE Convening: Advancing Innovation in Higher Education. This two-day event captured some of the most promising developments in higher education today and featured speakers highlighting major changes, challenges, and opportunities in California’s higher education landscape. Engaging panel discussions and pre-convening workshops were led by state and national higher education leaders and faculty who shared their insights on state funding priorities, the future of teaching and learning practices, and emerging frontiers such as data science pathways and programs.
A powerful conversation between keynote speaker, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, President Emeritus of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Dr. Lande Ajose, former higher education policy advisor to Governor Newsom, was a high note of the event and left attendees inspired to support equitable student success through institutional transformation and individual empowerment.
Five workshop-based learning tracks also showcased the cutting-edge research and innovative practices developed by our esteemed grantee community and partners through their Learning Lab funded projects. These Learning Track workshops created a space for participants to learn from faculty experts about the latest research and trends in emerging fields in higher education and discuss grantee experiences successfully implementing newly developed practices in their classrooms. Workshop presenters included interactive activities, group discussions, and hands-on demonstrations of the innovative tools and techniques implemented through their Learning Lab funded projects. These research-driven practices and thought-provoking pedagogies ensured that attendees came away from the convening with a better understanding of how to incorporate these innovations into their own teaching and learning practices.
