Digital Accessibility for Online Learning Webinar

Join us as experts from the UCLA Disabilities & Computing Program discuss accessibility best practices in online education. From “what is accessibility?” to best practices in developing accessible, technology-enhanced learning tools, this webinar will provide practical information with time for Q&A.
Panelists include Travis Lee, Carolanne Link, and Sal Santa Ana.
Adaptive Learning Technology Mini-Convening (Learning Lab Grantees Only)

This meeting will feature the LEARNER project hosted by UC Berkeley with partners CSU Long Beach and El Camino College. The UC Berkeley LEARNER project is founded on building the required curriculum modules and technology needed to employ a mastery learning model; "fixed (A-level) learning, variable time", rather than "fixed time, variable (A-F level) learning". The anchor platform we use is PrairieLearn, a free open-source system developed at UIUC that serves question generators, i.e., code that can generate thousands of equal-difficulty variations of a question. In addition to exams, it can host project autograders to allow students infinite attempts to achieve proficiency (with no penalty for late submissions). Our model is adaptive in that students are allowed to progress through a course at their own pace, slower than the "regular" pace if need be. We are in the very early pilot stage of design and development of a "learning navigator" that will track where each student is, when proficiency has been reached on a particular topic, and when later topics should be "unlocked". This navigator would provide a student view so they could see where they are and where they're going, as well as a dashboard for the instructor.
Closing the Calculus Equity Gap Webinar

Join us for a discussion with leading scholars and educators on the role college Calculus plays in achieving racial and gender equity in STEM, and how educators and policymakers can support student success in STEM pathways. Panelists include (from left to right) Christopher Jett (University of West Georgia), Frances Henderson (Just Equations), Nathan Alexander (Morehouse College), Omayra Ortega (Sonoma State University), and Pamela Burdman (Just Equations).
C-ID 101 Webinar

Have you wondered how courses can meet C-ID requirements and who decides? Join Learning Lab and guest Eric Wada, C-ID Curriculum Director, to find out how C-ID can facilitate articulation and transfer! (Visit https://c-id.net/ for more information.)
If you are applying for grant funding in response to Learning Lab’s Seeding Strategies to Close the Calculus Equity Gap RFP, this webinar will provide helpful guidance for course redesign projects.

The Power of CourseKata: Statistics and Data Science in the CCC

Do you teach introductory statistics? Are you the chair of a math department at a community college? Join this one-hour workshop to hear how community colleges can respond to the increased student enrollment in introductory statistics courses!
Eddie Tchertchian (Pierce College), Ben Smith (Pierce College), and Ji Son (Cal State LA) will be showcasing the free CourseKata online interactive textbook and in-class lessons that seamlessly integrate learning statistical concepts with learning to code with R in Jupyter notebooks (no experience with R or Jupyter needed).
Adaptive Learning Technology Mini-Convening (Learning Lab Grantees Only)

This virtual meeting will feature the “Adapt + LibreTexts” project, hosted by UC Davis with partners Mendocino College, CSU San Bernardino, CSU Chancellor’s Office, and the CCC Academic Senate. Principal Investigator Delmar Larson will introduce the project which has a goal to improve student performance in gateway chemistry courses. He will explain the project’s adaptive learning approach, which applies a “scaffold introduction” for faculty as a starting place upon which more sophisticated or complex utility can be learned and accessed. *This event is open to Learning Lab grantees only.
Learning Lab Grantee Fall Convening
The Art & Science of Transformation

2-3:20pm
Daniel Reinholz, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and faculty member in the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education at San Diego State University, provided a workshop on how organizational learning theories can be applied to STEM higher education to support more sustainable change initiatives.
3:30-5pm
Nancy Pryor and Rob Shorette, Learning Lab staff, explored team dynamics as a part of the "people" frame of the four frames theory for systemic change, and drew from the experiences of the grantee community to share insights on becoming a more effective collaborator.
The Syllabus as an Equity Practice
A Conversation with Estela Bensimon

A syllabus is much more than a contract. It is an artifact through which classroom culture can be deciphered, and which can help students feel welcome, represented, and valued. A syllabus reflects how a faculty member views students as learners and the efforts that the faculty member will make to support their success. In this session, you will learn six features of equity-minded syllabi: Welcoming, Creating a Partnership, Representing, Deconstructing, Demystifying, and Validating.
