Led by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and the University of California San Diego
(UCSD), this proof-of-concept project will develop and test a prototype AI-driven assessment tool to support the equitable award of Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). A4CPL will evaluate the tool’s feasibility and effectiveness in:
- -Determining whether assessment participants’ existing knowledge and skills satisfy the learning outcome requirements of an academic course;
- -Adapting to user input to fairly evaluate knowledge and skills across diverse educational, vocational,
racial/ethnic, age, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and - -Generating individualized feedback to enhance educational outcomes.
Background & Urgency:
The recent Los Angeles wildfires and increasing statewide wildfire risk underscore the urgent need for firefighters and government personnel with expertise in wildfire management. Most California firefighting agencies require only a high school diploma or GED, meaning many firefighters lack formal credentials despite extensive knowledge and experience. Additionally, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Conservation (Fire) Camps train incarcerated individuals in firefighting skills, but many leave the Camps without formal course credit or recognized credentials.
This proof-of-concept project anticipates impacting 38 students and 5 faculty/instructors/TA’s.
