Student Innovators Teaching Old Projects New Tricks (AI-PBL) Project Abstract: This project seeks to pilot a transformative engineering education by empowering students to take control of their learning by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into project-based learning (PBL). Unlike traditional methods, where students passively receive information, this initiative places them at the center of their educational journey, using AI to actively explore, question, and solve real-world challenges. The pilot includes one lab at UC Davis, one lab at Sacramento State (CSUS), and one lab at Folsom Lake College, engaging a total of at least 140 students. This distribution provides a diverse testing ground to showcase how AI can enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and equity through personalized support. The project involves a team of three faculty members redesigning classes to implement AI-enhanced PBL and two faculty members serving as assessment coordinator and data analyst. This collaborative effort ensures rigorous evaluation and continuous improvement of the pilot.

This project anticipates impacting 140 students and 3 faculty/instructors/TAs.
