The Collaborative AI Integration in STEM Education project aims to develop, pilot, and validate tasks that enhance students’ collaborative use of generative AI (genAI). The project has two main goals: (1) to create, pilot, and validate collaborative mathematical tasks integrating genAI, co-designed with faculty, to foster teamwork and critical thinking, and (2) to explore how these AI-integrated tasks can support students from diverse backgrounds by creating accessible learning environments. By addressing the gap between students seeking efficiency and faculty prioritizing critical thinking, the project aims to bridge this divide with AI-integrated tasks that promote collaborative and equitable learning in STEM. It focuses on improving prompt quality, student-AI interaction, and critical thinking skills in genAI use. The project will deliver instructional guidelines for integrating genAI into STEM education, fostering collaborative problem-solving and metacognitive skills vital for AI-driven careers. This inclusive project, prioritizing underrepresented groups (Hispanic, first-generation, and female students), will equip a diverse STEM student body with core collaborative skills for AI-integrated environments. The project will provide practical classroom guidelines for effective genAI use, impacting around 100 faculty and 4,000 students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Cal Poly Pomona, with tasks shared on OER platforms like oercommons.org.
This project anticipates impacting 100 students and 3 faculty/instructors.
