California State University East Bay (CSUEB), along with three community college (CC) partners is applying for the “Pathways Development” category. We seek funding to build an inclusive pathway for students to pursue a BS in Data Science (DS) through the INCLUDE grant. CSUEB will upgrade its DS concentration to a full B.S. in DS, with interdisciplinary pathways for students to pursue. The grant will focus on: 1) increasing the diversity of students who pursue a career in data science through targeted outreach at the community college (CC) level, 2) developing new courses in math, that break away from the traditional Calc I-Calc II pathways that most DS majors require and is often a roadblock for our students; and 3) integrating real data science projects for hands-on learning in the program by engaging with industries and organizations in the community. The anticipated outcomes for the proposed project are: a) new BS in Data Science program, b) new math courses for DS, c) new transfer pathways from CCs, d) increased representation of under-served populations (USP) in the new DS degree program, and e) an increased engagement between the participating institutions and data scientists in the community.
