This project is designed to increase student success by increasing student engagement. California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Precalculus and Calculus courses are fully coordinated and are designed to engage students in active learning. Inclusive and student-centered approaches to teaching are crucial for student success in these courses, especially given the diverse backgrounds students at CSUMB. However, faculty need ongoing support to effectively implement active learning strategies that attend to issues such as status and equitable participation to ensure all students meet their learning objectives.
Through this grant, the project team will develop and implement a sustainable professional development model for faculty in the Mathematics and Statistics Department. The project will focus on three areas, with faculty working collaboratively on strategies and resources to use in their classes. The first is to provide a foundation to new faculty on the general pedagogical culture within our department (such as reading apprenticeship, active learning, and complex instruction/small group work). The second is to develop regular professional development workshops that meet the ongoing needs of CSUMB faculty. Finally, the third is to create a Canvas course for faculty to continue to engage with professional development content asynchronously and find further resources around the pedagogical practices of the department.
This model will support both new and experienced faculty, drawing on existing campus expertise and building faculty capacity over time. It will focus on concrete goals, with faculty working collaboratively on strategies and resources to use in their classes. The project will evaluate progress using faculty and student experience survey data as well as academic student outcomes disaggregated by key demographic variables. The project team anticipates an increased faculty confidence and usage of active learning strategies, increased student engagement, and improved student success in Calculus pathway courses.
