The Japanese American Incarceration Testimony Interactive Q&A Project

This project aims to use AI to transform the underutilized video archive of Japanese Americans from Central California, incarcerated during World War II and preserved at the Fresno State Library, into an innovative educational tool. Leveraging AI, the project will create an interactive Q&A system, allowing students and educators to engage dynamically with survivors’ stories. As a pilot project, it will focus on 1-2 survivors. Natural language processing (NLP) will enable users to ask questions and receive AI-driven responses directly

Titan Research Immersion: Empowering Diversity in Chip Design

Semiconductors are the engine for future growth and development, making expertise in chip design a crucial skill. Due to advancements in artificial intelligence, electronic design automation tools have started to incorporate them to create cost-effective, efficient chips. Hence, training the future workforce in AI-assisted chip design is essential. However, too many students are unable to access this rapidly growing field. To address this issue, Titan Research Immersion Program will engage 30 students in an 8-week immersive experience, introducing them to

Natural Language Processing tool to analyze lower-division chemistry course evaluations

Student evaluations of teaching (SET) hold potential for formative feedback, yet manually analyzing qualitative data from large introductory STEM courses is time-consuming. This project will employ Natural Language Processing (NLP) to efficiently extract valuable insights from SET comments in lower-division chemistry courses. By focusing on foundational skills and inclusive teaching practices, the NLP model aims to: (1) identify areas for curricular improvement, (2) compare data quality across diverse student populations, and (3) uncover correlations between student sentiments and outcomes. Partnerships

Creating a Framework for Valued Learning Outcomes in 2030

Usage of Generative AI (GenAI) has become increasingly normalized in education and the workplace. Since GenAI easily outputs relatively sophisticated writing in standard academic English, many college educators feel apprehensive about how GenAI changes core college learning experiences. In doing so, many wonder what college learning experiences are still valuable. While instructors can restrict GenAI usage to hold assessments constant, pedagogical strategies to pre-empt or punish GenAI use pose barriers to equitable student learning outcomes. To empower instructors in fostering

SpartanAI: Elevating Course Design with Faculty and Student-Centric AI Agent

Institutions struggle to provide faculty with the necessary resources, training, and support for quality course design. Our research revealed that faculty demand just-in-time support for their course design. However, with a limited number of Instructional Designers at most universities, the needed support for faculty is lacking. Studies show that instructors increasingly use AI tools for course design and review tasks. Educators’ decision-making processes in integrating and evaluating AI-generated content call for refinement and closer attention due to the lack of

Addressing Generative AI Literacy Gaps in Gateway Writing and Mathematics Courses

This project aims to address equity gaps in students’ use of AI tools in gateway writing and math courses at CSU Maritime, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Davis. Our research will evaluate the impact of AI integrated and scaffolded assignments on students’ critical thinking, writing, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills. Additionally, we will investigate the broader effects of AI on students’ academics, ethics, and educators’ pedagogy. Since written communication and quantitative reasoning are correlated with students’ preparedness and retention in

ELEVATE: Enhancing Learning Experiences Via AI TEchniques

We propose integrating AI tutors in classrooms at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) to enhance learning and address educational equity. The ELEVATE program will develop and deploy personalized AI tutors across multiple disciplines (STEM and non-STEM), improving access and success for minority students by fostering equitable learning environments. Tens of classes will be refactored to use AI tutors, directly impacting more than 200 (two hundred) students and 20 (twenty) faculty with best practices in AI integration. This project marks CSUB’s

Partnership for Establishing a California Interactive Computing Open Resource (Cal-ICOR)

This initiative aims to streamline access to JupyterHub, an open-source, cloud-based platform for interactive computing and data science. Widely adopted in educational, scientific, and industrial environments, JupyterHub provides a consistent and powerful environment for students, enabling them to work with complex software dependencies, data visualizations, and large datasets. However, deploying and maintaining JupyterHub is a costly and technically challenging task, especially for many California public institutions. To address this, the project will create a centralized development and operations (DevOps) team

Enhancing the Engineering Pipeline from Community College to California’s Workforce

The Engineering Pathways Program seeks to strengthen and enhance transfer pathways for California community college engineering students entering the CSU and UC systems. The project achieves its goals through a summer bridge program, as well as industry partnerships that secure relevant technical internships for our cohorts. Specifically, students benefit from a virtual summer bridge program that provides modules to refresh key engineering concepts. The summer bridge program is asynchronous to maximize access, with students receiving dedicated tutor support. The program

Bridging Through DS Examples

By designing and implementing new data science examples to courses in Geography and Mathematics, this project will focus on exposing students from disciplines who historically have not been offered computational curriculum at the lower-division to data science fundamentals. Through new data science modules, this program will provide students with a space to see connections on how data science applies to many different fields. With this vision of recruitment in mind, the program will put a strong emphasis on engaging female
